A month ago today, I was in the tavern at the the north rim of the Grand Canyon drinking some local beers and striking up conversation after conversation. At this point, I had arrived at the north rim of the Grand Canyon a few hours earlier and had no idea where I was going to sleep yet. The campground was book and I am sure the hotel was booked as well, or more cash than I wanted to spend on a room. After all, I hadn’t paid for a nights sleep yet, why would I start now?

During the course of my conversation with the bartender and another employee from the park, I found out that the couches in the lodge are fair game for sleeping on, though it is not made common knowledge. So after finishing a few more beers, I went and grabbed my laptop to settle into the lodge for the night. After doing work for a while, I started to read a book and continued to do so until I fell asleep on the couch. I woke up a one point and the lodge was dark, a flashlight shinned upon me. I heard a guard say: “He’s just a hiker” then they proceeded to move on. Guess I discovered a loophole in the system 😀

I woke up again at around five AM and grabbed some coffee at the same tavern I had beers in the night before. I guess in the morning it doubles as a coffee joint. With my body caffeinated, I headed down to Bright Angel Point and perched myself upon a rock and waited for the golden morning light.
