I find something mysterious and alluring about the old lighthouses along the New England coast. One of the more accessible ones, the Portland Head Light is located about an hour north of Boston near Portland, Maine. The light serves as a beacon for ships heading into Portland Harbor.
Back in April, after a day of climbing and skiing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire we made a detour into Maine to checkout the Lighthouse. This was our last stop before heading to Boston to watch my friend finish the marathon, a day I will not soon forget.
Behind The Scenes
Camera: Canon EOS 6D
Lens: 24-105L
Focal Length: 32mm
ISO: 160
Aperture: f/8
Shutter Speed: 1/640th
The Tools: 15 Inch Macbook Pro
Location: Portland Head Light – Cape Elizabeth, Maine
Other Good Stuff: Lightroom 5, Nik Color Efex Pro 4
Workflow: Though this was shot in the middle of the day, I was able to take advantage of the clouds in the sky and wait for a moment when the sun was obscured by clouds, this allowed for a photo with softer light and more vibrant colors to be captured. In Lightroom, I corrected exposure, then quickly moved into Nik Color Efex Pro 4. I applied a vignette to focus the eyes on the structure, and used a combination of both skylight and foliage filters to bring out the colors in the water, sky, and building.
