Some people may hate the winter, others love it, and while I do love warm summer sunshine, and the chance to hike and photograph the outdoors with minimal layers, I still enjoy the spoils of a good winter. January in the northeast often has a pretty awesome yield of snow and Ice, and this winter has been no exception whatsoever. One this that is so unique about winter sports is that even though you may ski or climb the same line, year after year, things change. Even a subtle change is often a refreshing way to enjoy and old experience. Ice climbing has been a slow learning experience for me. Though the goal is the same as with rock climbing, the way you move on the wall is fundamentally different. Emalee on the other hand, is new to both and was able to pick up ice climbing quite quickly.
Behind The Scenes

ISO: 400
Aperture: f/4
Shutter Speed: 1/800th
The Tools: 15 Inch Macbook Pro

Workflow: These types of shots are some of my favorites to photograph, especially with right natural light. Capturing an athlete or outdoor enthusiast doing what they love is so very rewarding, and in my mind need little editing to add to the moment. For this shot, All my work was done in Lightroom 5. I adjusted the image temperature to correctly recreate what I saw with my eyes, then to further enhance the image, I used several adjustment brushes to bring out the beautiful blue in the ice, and some detail around the climber.
