every backpacker and adventure enthusiast probably has some sort of survival guide in there bag of tricks, but its not always practical to have it on you when you will need it most. This forces us to photo copy key points, or memorize it, which is not a bad thing by any mean, but what if i told you there was a way to have an entire guide with you? this is where the Don’t Die Out There Deck comes into play. this is a standard poker deck, but with a twist. each card offers a different survival skill, and each suit is a different color offering different categories.
Diamonds are blue and offer survival esssentials, signals, locating your position, and shelters.
Spades are purple and cover assessing the situation, water, fire, food, and evacuation techniques.
Hearts are red and feature basic first aid, hypothermia, frostbite, heat illness, and sprains and dislocations.
Clubs are green and have topics related to CPR, head and spine injuries, fractures, bites and stings, and evacuating the injured.
each suite has a contents card, and page numbers are indicated by the number on the card making finding what you need simple. i am really quite impressed with the detail of the information contained on these cards, from the layout of the information to the well done illustrations for some of the more complex techniques such as splints, shelters and solar stills. the construction of these cards are quite solid, and are plastic coated to provide water resistance. the only flaw is that the box seems like it will fall apart relatively quick in a backpacking environment, but this is only a minor gripe and can be remedied by finding a waterproof box or small drawstring bag.
when it comes right down to it, this is great bring along for any adventure enthusiast, and features indispensable information, and you can even play a game of blackjack with them on the trail.
at 7 bucks, the Don’t Die Out There Deck is a no brainer and can be found on Amazon
