Zion Canyon is a pretty rad place. It is quite different from the Grand Canyon in a lot of ways. For one, it’s walls are very shear uninterrupted rock faces. This draws climbers from all over the world to this Utah Park.

When I met up with a friend this fall in Zion, the campgrounds were book solid, so we decided to try our luck at obtaining a backcountry camping permit. Luckily we  were able to snag a permit for one of the sites on the West Rim Trail. This was an out and back hike, over twelve miles each way. The hike started with a pretty strenuous climb from the canyon floor to the West Rim. This also is used as access to the famous Angels Landing, which I didn’t get to hike to this trip, but that will be my first stop next time I get to Zion.

As we were ascending the seemingly endless switchback staircase, I stopped for a break(It was nearly 95f on the canyon floor) and turned around to see this beautiful view of the walls of Zion. If you look really closely, you can see hikers on the trail below 🙂

Notes: The bulk of the editing for this photograph was done in Lightroom 5. Once I had the image where I liked it, I moved it into Nik Color Effects Pro 4 to add some final smoothing and color processing to the image to bring out the colors a bit more.
