Heading To Florida

Tomorrow I am heading to Florida for a few days to work on some travel writing and photography for a client. I am really looking forward to visiting a place I haven’t been since I was sixteen. Though typical tourist destinations like the Orlando area aren’t usually where I gravitate, I am looking forward to seeing what I can create with my camera, both for my client, and for Adventure Travel Buzz. Make sure you check out Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook to follow my adventure in real time. 🙂

Shadow Canyon

When I was visiting Horseshoe Bend in Page Arizona back in September, I was not surprised to see a slew of tourists exploring this famous landmark. While making my way down to the overlook, I came upon a gentleman climbing a really cool piece of rock. The way the bright setting sun silhouetted the person was too good to pass up. Plus I really love and epic contrasty shot.

Behind The Scenes

Camera: Canon EOS 6D
Lens: 70-200L
Focal Length: 200mm
ISO:
160
Aperture: f/13
Shutter Speed: 1/250th
The Tools: 15 Inch Macbook Pro
Location: Horseshoe Bend Overlook – Page, Arizona
Other Good Stuff: Lightroom 5, Photoshop CC,  Nik Color Efex Pro 4

Workflow: This was a pretty simple process, I started by working with the photo in Lightroom. Since I knew I wanted to create a silhouette shot, the first order of business was to pump up the blacks which I achieved by lowering the “Blacks” slider to -100. I also made adjustments to the “Hightlights” slider to pull out a little more detail in the background rock features. One final thing I did in Lightroom was use the spot healing brush to remove some lens flare in the lower left of the frame. After that I imported the image into Color Efex Pro 4 and applied a user defined graduated filter to create a semi-surreal desert toned look. Check out the screenshot below to see the photo as it looked out of the camera.
