Ah Mesa Verde National Park, home of the largest archaeological preserve in the United States and once home to the ancient pueblo people. I had heard of this park briefly before I went, but I don’t think I fully understood how much history was there, and how important it was to preserving the history of the people that occupied North America well before Europeans settled. When I planned my trip to Utah and Arizona, I hadn’t realized how close to Mesa Verde I actually was. It is practically just over the Colorado border from Southeastern Utah, and I was looking for a new and exciting place to camp for a night.

The road into the park in a long but beautiful ride. Often times during the forty minute drive to the cliff dwellings, I was afforded a 360 degree view of the surrounding area below the mesa. The Rockies were visible off in the distance as well, but the star player at this place, in my opinion was the cliff dwellings of the Anasazi people. I recommend taking a guided tour of one of the dwellings, it is the only way you will get to experience them up close, and believe me, you want to be right up close to these places.
